Where I Actually Started
My first law office was a desk inside my mother-in-law's OBGYN practice.

My earliest clients were my mother-in-law's patients — people who came in for a medical appointment and left with help on a will, a traffic ticket, or a divorce. I was doing court-appointed work and document review on the side just to keep cash flowing.
There was no roadmap. No blueprint. No one telling me what to do next.
I was building it in real time — and making every mistake you can make along the way.

The Detour That Taught Me Everything
At a certain point, I made a decision that surprised people: I left my own practice for two years to work at a mid-sized insurance defense firm.
It was one of the most valuable things I ever did.
I saw firsthand what a well-run firm actually looks like — disciplined billing practices, real operational systems, and what competent office management and paralegals can do for an attorney's ability to practice law. Those lessons came back with me and fundamentally changed how I ran everything.
But I also saw the other side clearly.
I watched a firm that had built its entire book of business around one major client. One relationship change, and the entire operation would be in crisis. I watched a firm that treated marketing as an afterthought — assuming the work would always come. It's a slow leak most firms don't notice until it's serious.
I came back to my own practice with a much clearer picture of what to build — and what to avoid at all costs.
What I Built
Over the next two decades, that firm — the one that started in a borrowed desk in an OBGYN waiting area — grew into a multi-million dollar practice.
Not because I had advantages. Not because I had a perfect plan from day one. But because I eventually learned the right lessons, put the right systems in place, and built something that didn't depend on any single client, referral source, or relationship to survive.
Today, Batch, Poore & Williams, PC serves clients across North Carolina in Family Law and Civil Litigation. I have been recognized by Super Lawyers and by Marquis Who's Who. I am a Certified Mediator and Parenting Coordinator, a former member of the Bar Grievance Committee, and a former Board Member of the Wake County Bar Association.
I share that not to impress you — but to establish something important: I have been in this profession long enough, and deeply enough, to know what actually works and what doesn't.
